Concordia Humana motto

  • First Christmas in July fundraiser a huge success!
Concordia Humana kicked off its second project with a bang today, collecting 1076 pounds of nonperishable food for Cincinnati's FreeStore Foodbank in Loveland, Ohio. Special thanks to the volunteers who collected all day in the 90º heat and, of course, to everyone who donated.
  • Summer of Donuts Begins!

I started Donuts for Darfur in May 2008 as what I thought would be a one-time event at St. Xavier High School in Cincinnati, OH. Needless to say, the only thing that didn't go according to my borderline-obsessive plans was that "one-time" part. When I saw the hunger-driven damage that a school of 1,600 teenage boys could do to a $1 donut stand in only three hours, I knew I had struck gold - St. X has an appetite for breakfast matched only by its concern for international social justice. I can see that my idea has permanently impacted my alma mater, from inspiring similar fundraisers to changing the way school event advertising is conducted. Donuts for Darfur has had a sizable impact upon me as well. It's forged new friendships and strengthened old ones, given me a means to demonstrate my creativity and organization in an extracurricular setting, and has certainly made me more socially conscious.

Other than selling ring-shaped breakfast treats, I enjoy reading (especially Kurt Vonnegut!), eating at Golden Corral to the point of numbness below the waistline followed by a five-hour visit to Kings Island, and watching low-budget horror films from before 1990. Seriously, nothing makes for a better movie night than a made-for-television Sci-Fi Channel "classic."

I'm eternally grateful to be a part of this project. Viva la Donuts!

I joined Donuts for Darfur in Spring 2008, when Danny realized that he would need some sort of large vehicle to transport donuts from stores around the Cincinnati area to the hungry masses at St. Xavier. I was the only person crazy and/or gullible enough to volunteer to drive around the city at 4:30AM, and so it began..... More recently, I've been Concordia Humana's "paperwork ninja", navigating complex organizational issues with colleges and universities around the country. I also work on new projects and new ideas for Donuts at the corporate level. During the day, I'm a second-year student in Chemical Engineering at the University of Cincinnati, and do research in computational approaches to exciting areas of chemical and biological research. I also enjoy computer programming, construction, and theatrical lighting. I am eternally grateful to the Donuts project for giving me a chance to do things I love while making great friends and changing the world in a perhaps not-so-tiny way.

I would also like to point out that at some point during every sale, I remind myself that I seem to be the only member of the project who fundamentally does not enjoy eating donuts.

I am a former classmate of Danny's who joined Concordia Humana in summer 2009 as part of an effort to expand the Donuts for Darfur program to the university level. As a freshman engineering student at Ohio State, I tackled the logistics of establishing a chapter with the university and currently serve as the local chapter treasurer. The program has received generous support from local bakeries, faculty, and student volunteers. At the beginning of 2010, I began service on the Board as Treasurer for the organization in addition to the chapter position I continue to hold. I am proud also to help bring Donuts for Darfur to Canada as a nonprofit activity though Concordia Humana Canada. It is exciting to watch the Donuts program grow as we get more volunteers across the US and Canada.
